Mom’s Hot Fudge Sauce

My mother has been making this recipe since I was a kid. She once sent it to me, so for posterity, here it is.


Hot Fudge Sauce


3 tablespoons butter

3 ounces (3 squares) unsweetened chocolate

1 cup white sugar

½ cup hot water

¼ cup corn syrup

Dash of salt

1 teaspoon vanilla


In a heavy saucepan melt butter with chocolate. Add sugar, water, corn syrup and salt. Bring to a boil, stirring almost constantly. Reduce heat and boil gently, without stirring, until smoothly thickened, about 8-10 minutes. Stir in vanilla. Serve hot. Makes about 1½ cups.

The sauce keeps well in the refrigerator and can be heated in the microwave.

The recipe can be halved or doubled.
